Introducing the Sony FX3, a compact and streamlined cinema camera that combines the best features of the Cinema Line and Alpha series. Designed with solo shooters and travel applications in mind, the FX3 offers exceptional portability without compromising on performance. Its “cage-free” design allows for direct attachment of various accessories to the camera body, further enhancing its versatility.
With the firmware update v.2.0, the FX3 aligns even closer with Sony’s Cinema Line workflow. This update brings advanced log shooting options, including Cine EI choices, the ability to import user LUTs, timecode syncing via an optional cable, and a more user-friendly camera interface. Please note that when updating from v.1.01 or earlier, it’s important to save your preferred settings as the update process will initialize the camera and won’t be able to read saved settings from the previous version.
The FX3 excels in capturing expressive UHD 4K video, thanks to its 12.1MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor (10.2MP effective in video mode) and BIONZ XR processor. It offers internal 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling or 16-bit raw output, providing exceptional image quality. The sensor’s back-illuminated design enhances sensitivity and clarity, with an expandable ISO range of 80-409,600 and a dynamic range of more than 15 stops, ensuring remarkable performance in various lighting conditions. The S-Cinetone mode, along with S-Log3/2 gamut support and 10-bit HLG, facilitates seamless color grading and HDR productions. Additionally, the Fast Hybrid AF system enables intelligent and rapid focusing, along with subject tracking, while significantly reducing rolling shutter artifacts.
Featuring a full-frame 4K Exmor R sensor and BIONZ XR processor, the FX3 captures stunning bokeh and shallow depth of field looks. With a base sensitivity of 80-102,400 (expandable up to 409,600) and a wide dynamic range of 15+ stops, it excels in low-light situations and reproduces scenes with incredible detail and color fidelity, providing ample room for post-production adjustments. The default S-Cinetone color setting ensures beautiful skin tone reproduction and a softer-toned look that harmonizes with footage from other Sony Cinema Line cameras, such as VENICE, FX9, and FX6. Additionally, the camera offers various video recording options, including up to 4K 120p for slow-motion capture, simultaneous recording of 16-bit raw over HDMI and XAVC 4K in-camera, and cooling features like a silent fan and a heatsink for uninterrupted recording.
The FX3 prioritizes ease of use for solo shooters, incorporating real-time Tracking and Eye autofocus functions powered by AI-based algorithms and a user-friendly touchscreen focus function. The camera provides seven choices of AF Transition Speed for rack focusing and five AF Subject Shift settings for adjusting speed when shifting focus. Its ergonomic design enables single-handed control, with essential controls conveniently located for easy access. The camera’s tally lights on the top, front, and rear ensure precise monitoring during recording, facilitating coordinated movements and dialogue delivery.
When it comes to audio, the FX3 offers pro-level options, including a detachable XLR adapter handle with two XLR-1/4″ TRS combo audio inputs, a mic holder, a 3.5mm input for external microphones, and up to 4-channel, 24-bit audio recording. For remote control, streaming, and file transfers, the camera can be operated remotely using the Imaging Edge Mobile or Imaging Edge Desktop apps, and files can be transferred via Wi-Fi or a wired USB Type-C connection.
The FX3 shares several features with other
Sony cameras. It includes post-production stabilization using Sony’s Catalyst Prepare/Browse software, an adjustable balance between shake compensation and image area trimming, and an LCD touch panel for easy operation. It also offers common attributes found in the FX6 and a7S III, such as S-Cinetone, S-Log3, HLG, and Rec. 709 gamma options, tally lamps, internal fan for cooling, and a zoom lever for frame adjustments. Additionally, it boasts 5-axis in-body image stabilization, 16-bit raw output via HDMI, S-Log2 gamma choice, an expanded ISO range of 80 to 409,600, and wireless connectivity options including dual-band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi and a wired LAN link through the USB Type-C port with a separate adapter.
