The Sony a7S III sets new standards for full-frame mirrorless cameras, offering optimized video capabilities, enhanced sensitivity, and unmatched speed. With its upgraded features, including a revised 12.1MP Exmor RS BSI CMOS sensor and advanced BIONZ XR image processor, this camera delivers exceptional performance, improved noise reduction, a wider dynamic range, and outstanding video recording capabilities, including UHD 4K 120p and internal 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling.

12.1MP Exmor RS BSI CMOS Sensor and BIONZ XR Processor

The redesigned 12.1MP full-frame CMOS sensor features a back-illuminated Exmor RS design, enabling improved clarity, reduced noise, and impressive sensitivity ranging from ISO 80-102400 (expandable to ISO 40-409600). The updated sensor design also provides 2x faster readout speeds compared to previous models, while the BIONZ XR image processor ensures up to 8x faster processing and overall camera handling. Together, they significantly reduce rolling shutter effects and deliver a wide dynamic range of approximately 14 stops for stills and 15 stops for video. Additionally, the camera supports 10 fps continuous shooting, allowing you to capture up to 1000 uncompressed raw files in a single burst.

Video Recording

The a7S III offers UHD 4K recording with frame rates up to 120p, utilizing full 1:1 pixel readout without binning. Internal 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling is available in all recording modes, and when using the full-size HDMI A port for external recording, you can achieve 16-bit raw output for exceptional tonal reproduction and post-production flexibility.

Two codecs have been developed for the camera: XAVC HS, which uses HEVC/H.265 encoding to retain more detail at lower bitrates, and XAVC S-I, an intraframe codec that ensures consistent performance and quality at bitrates up to 600 Mb/s. The high-speed 120 fps recording enables 4x and 5x slow-motion movie recording, and you can even achieve an effective 240p frame rate when recording at Full HD resolution for ultimate motion control.

The a7S III supports long-form recording without any time limits, allowing for unlimited clip lengths. It also features an improved heat-dissipating structure, enabling longer recording times of approximately 60 minutes at 4K60p.

Advanced Color Control

With the S-Cinetone color profile, the a7S III delivers distinct colors and natural-looking skin tones that match Sony’s professional Cinema Line cameras. This color profile, based on technology from the VENICE and other Cinema Line cameras, offers beautiful mid-tones, soft colors, and well-controlled highlights. You can further customize the color and gamma settings, adjust the gamma, black level, knee, color level, and more. The camera also supports S-Log2 Gamma Curve, providing increased dynamic range for greater post-production flexibility.

Autofocus and Image Stabilization

The Fast Hybrid AF system covers 92% of the image area, incorporating 759 phase-detection points and 425 contrast-detection areas for quick and precise focusing in various lighting conditions, even down to -6 EV sensitivity. This autofocus system is available in all recording modes, enhancing both video and stills applications. The camera offers Real-time Tracking for AI-based tracking of moving subjects and touch tracking for manual subject selection. Real-time Eye AF ensures critical sharpness for both human and animal subjects. You can fine-tune the focusing system with AF transition speed and AF subject shift sensitivity controls to achieve the desired focus shift speed
