Sigma 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports Lens: Super-Telephoto Powerhouse
The Sigma 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports Lens combines the extreme reach, impressive speed, and outstanding optical quality of a super-telephoto prime with the undeniable versatility of a zoom. This well-rounded workhorse is built for photographing demanding subjects like sports, wildlife, and other distant action. With its constant f/4 maximum aperture, lightning-fast autofocus, robust image stabilization, and durable design, this impressive lens can easily replace multiple telephoto primes without sacrificing weight or speed.
Superior Reach and Uncompromising Optical Quality
This zoom lens effectively covers a 300-600mm range with a constant f/4 maximum aperture, allowing you to maintain speed and control over depth of field even in available light conditions, while keeping the weight manageable.
The lens features an internal zoom and internal focus design, which maintains the overall length of the lens during operation. This crucial design choice also reduces center of gravity fluctuations, ensuring stable and predictable handling, especially when working on a monopod or tripod.
Its professional-grade optics incorporate a series of low dispersion and high refractive index glass elements to deliver exceptional clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy throughout the entire zoom and focusing ranges. Chromatic aberrations are meticulously controlled, and a front Nano Porous Coating (NPC) effectively reduces flaring and ghosting for high contrast and vibrant images.
Advanced Autofocus and Powerful Optical Stabilization
The 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports lens is engineered for tracking distant moving subjects with precision and agility:
HLA-Driven AF: A high-thrust HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) quickly moves the lightweight focusing group, enabling lightning-fast focus switching and nimble tracking of fast-moving subjects.
Versatile Function Ring: A new function ring can be configured for one of two settings: in Focus Preset Mode, turning the ring instantly shifts focus to a pre-registered position; in Power Focus Mode, turning the ring allows for constant speed focus pulling (ideal for video) with two-step speed control.
Tactile Control: Four separate AFL (Autofocus-Lock) buttons make it easy to control focus position while tracking, while dedicated Focus Mode and Focus Limiter switches provide even greater control over focus speed and range.
Robust Image Stabilization (OS2)
This lens features a powerful image stabilization system, compensating for an impressive 5.5 stops of camera shake at the 600mm position. Powered by Sigma’s advanced OS2 algorithm and utilizing a dedicated drive unit, actuator, and high-precision sensor, this stabilization system is perfectly matched to the lens’s larger size and wider aperture design.
For more refined control, two OS modes are available:
Mode 1: A general application stabilization mode, suitable for most photo and video situations.
Mode 2: A specialized setting for panning work, utilizing the OS2 algorithm to better stabilize shots while moving the lens horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, regardless of the camera’s orientation.
Durable Design and Intuitive Handling
Built for harsh environments, the lens features a highly durable design intended for use in challenging conditions:
Magnesium alloy barrel: Offers robust durability without excessive weight.
Dust- and splash-resistant seals: Ensure reliability in inclement weather.
Water- and oil-repellant front element coating: Makes the front element easy to clean.
Thermal insulation paint: Prevents overheating in extreme temperatures.
As a heavier, larger lens, the 300-600mm f/4 often benefits from tripod or monopod use. It features a rotating tripod collar with detents at each 90° position, and the removable tripod foot is Arca-type compatible for direct attachment to various heads. It’s compatible with 40.5mm filters via an included drop-in filter holder, with optional variable ND and circular polarizer drop-in filters also available. The lens comes complete with a matching lens hood, a custom backpack-style protective case, the removable tripod socket, and the drop-in filter holder.
