Introducing the Nikon Z9, a professional-grade camera that combines speed, image quality, and connectivity to meet the diverse needs of photographers and filmmakers. This flagship mirrorless camera boasts a newly developed sensor, advanced autofocus performance, and exceptional 8K video recording capabilities.
Revolutionary Sensor and Advanced Processing
At the heart of the Z9 lies a cutting-edge FX-format 45.7MP stacked BSI CMOS sensor. This sensor’s stacked design enables rapid readout speeds, minimizing rolling shutter effects, while the backside illumination enhances clarity and reduces noise, even at higher ISO settings. With its high resolution, the sensor caters to landscape, portraiture, and detail-focused genres, as well as supports recording video in up to 8K resolution. The sensor offers a native ISO range of 64-25600 (expandable to 32-102400) and delivers stunning color reproduction and detail rendering.
Working in harmony with the sensor is the EXPEED 7 image processor, which operates at approximately 10 times the speed of the Z 7II. This powerful engine maximizes the capabilities of the stacked sensor, delivering blazing-fast autofocus speeds, high burst shooting rates, generous buffer capacity, smooth video performance, and overall responsive handling. The Z9 can achieve continuous shooting speeds of 20 fps in raw, 30 fps in JPEG, and an impressive 120 fps when capturing 11MP stills, all with full AF/AE performance. The camera can buffer over 1000 raw images in a single burst, allowing for continuous shooting for approximately 50 seconds. Furthermore, the Pre-Release Capture feature captures frames up to one second before fully pressing the shutter, ensuring no decisive moment is missed.
The Z9 adopts an exclusively electronic shutter design, leveraging the sensor’s speed and stacked structure to eliminate the need for a mechanical shutter. This design enables a top shutter speed of 1/32,000 sec and significantly reduces motion distortion, preserving the accuracy of fast-moving subjects. Flash sync is supported up to 1/200 sec, and the camera can operate silently, free from concerns about mechanical wear. A customizable shutter release sound can be added if desired.
Fast and Intelligent Autofocus
The Z9 features a comprehensive 493-point phase-detection autofocus (AF) system that covers the entire sensor area, delivering swift and precise focusing performance. Leveraging the high-speed communication of the Z interface and the sensor’s capabilities, the AF system can achieve readings at an impressive rate of up to 120 fps. The camera employs deep learning technology and an advanced algorithm for automatic Subject Detection, recognizing nine distinct subject types, including humans, animals, and various objects. When using Auto-Area AF, the camera automatically detects, focuses, and tracks these subjects as they move across the frame. The Eye-Detection AF has been refined to improve accuracy and recognize eyes of all sizes within the scene.
The Z9 introduces the 3D Tracking mode to Nikon’s mirrorless lineup, which pairs subject detection with advanced focus tracking. This mode excels at capturing fast and erratic subjects moving parallel or perpendicular to the camera. Additionally, there are three Dynamic-Area AF modes with varying focus area sizes to accommodate different types of moving subjects. Firmware 2.0 adds 20 customizable Wide-Area AF selection patterns, with 12 patterns available during video recording, allowing for more precise AF and subject detection within specific areas of the frame.
High-Resolution 8K and 4K Video Capabilities
The Z9 sets new standards in video recording capabilities, supporting resolutions up to 8K. It employs full pixel readout to enable UHD 8K 30p video recording for approximately 2 hours and 5 minutes. The camera also supports full-frame 4K recording up
